The Parenting Buzz on Clipgator
Still reeling from yesterday’s buzz about the toxic chemical found in hard, clear baby bottles? Greg at daddytypes has posted a useful blog about the issue (and a very useful discussion thread follows his post).
To summarize, Environment California tested five brands of plastic baby bottles (Avent, Evenflo, Dr. Brown’s, Playtex Gerber) and found that each of these hard plastic bottles leached the chemical Bisphenol A into the liquid contained in the bottle. Bisphenol A is toxic and has been linked to cancers, obesity, diabetes and impaired immune function, just to name a few of its evils.
The Industry Types were quick to reply. Their message boiled down to: stop crying wolf, it’s not a big deal…we’re meeting the minimum standards set by the Feds…besides, a little Bisphenol A never hurt anyone.
You’ll understand if we’re still a little skeptical…
What can one do to protect one’s brood from exposure to Bisphenol A? Since all polycarbonate plastics are made using Bisphenol A, the simple answer is to get rid of all things plastic: baby toys, teethers and yes, bottles. Then toss out your plastic containers, utensils, plates, food packaging and even your eyeglasses. No big deal, right?
Environment California also makes some suggestions (including not letting kids put plastic toys in their mouths), which are summarized in Greg’s post: About That BOTTLE OF DEATH You Just Put In The Kid’s Mouth. Again.
